Other support
Student parents
Many of our students have children or other dependents to care for whilst they are at University. Others may become parents or acquire additional responsibilities during their programme of study. The advice and guidance offered in this area of the website will help you to provide accurate information to students.
Having responsibility for dependents should not cause a student to be treated less favourably than others without such responsibilities, and the University makes every effort to operate reasonably and flexibly without comprising academic standards and its responsibility to be fair to all students.
For their part, students have a responsibility to keep Schools informed of their circumstances and to endeavour to meet deadlines and suchlike as much as possible.
Funding and sponsorship arrangements for postgraduate research students (PGRs), together with other aspects of their relationship with the University (e.g. if they have any paid employment) might mean that there are particular implications or procedures to be aware of.
Research students should be advised to seek advice from the Research Degrees and Researcher Development Team:
Advice can also be found and/or to consult the following documents:
Research council-funded PGRs are advised to refer to UKRI terms and conditions for information about funding during maternity leave https://www.ukri.org/publications/terms-and-conditions-for-research-grants/
